A longtime familiar voice to sports fans in San Diego, Chris Ello begins his second season handling the pregame and postgame shows for Padres baseball.

A former baseball teammate of Padre great Tony Gwynn while at San Diego State, Ello began his radio career hosting the sports talk show, “The World of Sports,” on XTRA Sports 690. He has made several sports talk radio stops along the way in America’s Finest City, as both an afternoon drive and morning show host, before arriving at Entercom last year.

He is well-known for his play-by-play broadcasting, and currently is in his 11th-season as the voice of San Diego State women’s basketball. He also handles baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball play-by-play for the Aztecs, along with being the sideline reporter on football broadcasts.

Ello was the voice of San Diego Gulls hockey for 11 years (calling five championship seasons along the way), and also has broadcasted on both radio and television for San Diego franchises in pro basketball, pro soccer and indoor football. He also was the voice of the San Diego Section CIF football and basketball championships for several seasons.

Among the highlights of his career was working alongside the legendary Jerry Coleman, announcing Padres spring training games back in 2003. Ello also has done sports writing for the Los Angeles Times, Pasadena Star-News (where he was a columnist and covered a pair of Lakers’ World Championship teams), and the San Diego Union-Tribune (serving as the beat writer for Del Mar horse racing the past two summers).   

Ello is married, and he and wife Lori – who’s also in the radio business – live in San Diego.
