With the 28-21 win over then 23rd ranked Arizona State last Saturday, the Aztecs for the first time in school history have had back to back seasons beating a ranked team. Firsts for the school have become quite common place in the Rocky Long era. But the real test will be winning more than just back to back games. As they go for three wins in a row they face the Eastern Michigan Eagles from the MAC, also for the first time in school history. And the Aztecs need to be very wary of a trap game against a team that beat Purdue this season.

The keys to the game are going to be simple...don’t get caught sleeping and feed Juwan Washington. After three games I will no longer question if Juwan Washington can replace Rashaad Penny. He’s already proven he is more than capable of being the star that Penny was. If you need proof (which you shouldn’t) here is where he ranks nationally:

  • 1st in forcing a missed tackle with 29 (8 more than anyone else)
  • 3rd in rushing yards after contact (291)
  • 4th in rushing yards per game (150.7)
  • 5th in all-purpose yards per game (190.0)
  • 9th in rushing TDs (5)

I don't want to hear from the naysayers out there...San Diego State IS “Running Back U”. Enter secret weapon number 1, Chase Jasmin. The back up running back is doing the same thing to defenses that Washington is. Jasmin is coming off a career high 112 yards rushing against a tough Sun Devils team and I think that should really scare Eastern Michigan.

I liked what I saw from Ryan Agnew last week in his first career start and I think he will probably settle in nicely with the offense. We already saw what he is capable of when he uses his legs and it’s going to open up the offense. They just all need time together to figure out how to best play as a unit. To win this game, Ryan Agnew needs to do one and one thing only...protect the football. That should be his #1 job and I’m sure his coaches aren’t letting him forget that.

After reading everything you must think the offense is the best part of the team. Nope. The defense has shown this season they are one of the tougher defenses in the country to play against. A lot of it having to do with Rocky Long being a defensive genius but guys like linebacker Kyahva Tezino. Tezino is Secret Weapon Number 2, but not for long because he is becoming a star. According to Pro Football Focus, Tezino leads all of FBS inside linebackers this season in performance grade.

In his last 8 games he has put up huge numbers with 83 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss. This season alone, he leads the team in nearly every defensive category, including tackles (27), tackles for loss (3.5) and sacks (2.0). Not to mention he is tough to take out of the game. Currently, he  is tied for the lead with most defensive snaps on the team (185).

And last but not least, the Aztecs Secret Weapon Number 3 (and most dangerous secret weapon) is their (hopefully) awad winning kicker who will most likely be kicking on Sundays, John Baron II. Currently, he is leading college football among active kickers for accuracy. He has made 38 out of his last 43 kicks which comes in at a whopping 88%. Here he is nailing a LONG field goal against the Sun Devils.

I think the Aztecs are the better team in this matchup, but you can’t allow the high of last week become a let down this week. I am 99.9% confident we will be talking about a 3-1 Aztecs team come Sunday morning.
