Aztecs In a Must Win Situation Against Fresno State

November 17, 2018 - 10:08 am

It's a win-or-go-home type of game for the Aztecs in Fresno tonight. Rocky Long and his team will face one of the best teams in the Mountain West conference in Fresno State (8 - 2), and if they lose, the preseason goal of winning the Mountain West is gone.

After the loss to UNLV last week, the Aztecs now have to win out with two games remaining, and hope that Nevada loses one of their two remaining games. Although I must say Nevada looks to be in the driver seat facing San Jose State and UNLV in the last two.

The Aztecs' offense takes a big hit with two of their starting lineman out for the game. Tyler Roemer (indefinite suspension) and Keith Ismael (concussion) will be missing their first games since they started playing for the Aztecs. That's 46 combined games of experience that the Aztecs' offensive line will be missing. Not a good omen especially after Rocky Long said in his press conference this week that the offensive line was the weakest part of his team.

During that press conference I got up the courage to ask Coach Long about his quarterback situation. It was Christian Chapman against New Mexico, it was Ryan Agnew against UNLV, and to start the game this week it will be Christian Chapman. But Ryan Agnew will see time in the first half and then they will decide. Similar to what we've seen over the last few weeks.

Inconsistency has been a common word used this year with the offense, but I still think that if consistency is a problem then you should pick a quarterback and stick with them. Let the offense build that chemistry.

Do I think the Aztecs are going to win this game? Honestly, no, I don't. Fresno State has rolled teams this year and it will be tough for the Aztecs with the offensive line they have for this game.

Would it surprise me that the Aztecs won this game? No, not one bit. Earlier this year when the Aztecs went to Boise, people said the game was over before it even started. Then we saw the Aztecs dominate the Broncos, and take home the win on the road. When everyone counts them out, they get the best out of themselves, and get a season-changing win.

I referenced my question in the press conference earlier, and below you can hear it! Jeff McBrayer and I take you through the game against Fresno State, and go more in depth into the scenario for a Mountain West title.
