Aztecs Defense Dominates High Powered Broncos

The Aztecs made a major statement after the 19-13 win in Boise.

The Aztecs had a tall task taking on the high-powered Boise State Broncos offense, and passed the test no problem. I say no problem lightly, this was actually a very  very big deal. The Aztecs went into Boise and beat the Broncos 19-13. In fact Rocky Long's defense didn't just pass the test, they absolutely DOMINATED the test. This was game planning to perfection. Let the defense win the game, and just have the offense do enough to keep them in the lead. There were so many blitzes called and so many big hits on Broncos quarterback Brett Rypien, I'm sure he had nightmares of Aztec defenders last night! I was so impressed by the defense in this game, I think I need to list every single thing they did that is just mind-boggling.

  • Coming  into the game the Broncos ranked 18th in the country with 43.3 points a game. The Aztecs gave up 13.
  • The Broncos averaged 538.5 yards a game ranking them 8TH in the country for yards gained.
    • The Aztecs allowed 229 total yards.
  • The Broncos averaged 362 passing yards per game ranking them 4TH in the country. The Aztecs limited Brett Rypien and co. to 178 yards.
  • The Broncos averaged 176.5 rushing yards per game coming in. The Aztecs only gave up 51 yards rushing.
    • Coming into the game the Aztecs were ranked 2nd in the country in rushing yards allowed. They  may jump to the top after this week.
  • The Broncos only had TWO turnovers ON THE YEAR. The Aztecs forced 3 turnovers yesterday alone.
    • QB Brett Rypien had ZERO interceptions on the year. He had two yesterday.
  • Coming into the game the Broncos converted on 3rd down 56.06% of the time. Good enough for 6th in the country. The Aztecs limited them to 6-19 or 32%.

The bye week may have been the real winner in this game. Rocky Long and his staff came into the game with a perfect plan. The defense looked like a defense that could keep up with a lot of teams in the country. The Aztecs move to 4-1 on the year, and most importantly 1-0 in the Mountain West Conference.

The Aztecs have a short week as they have the Air Force Academy heading to SDCCU Stadium this Friday.
