Friday Night High School Football on The Fan - Carlsbad at Cathedral Catholic - 7:00 PM

The San Diego CIF Open Divison Playoffs kickoff on Friday night as the Carlsbad Lancers travel down the road to meet the Cathedral Catholic Dons at Manchester Stadium.  Carlsbad has been facing stiff competition week in and week out, with one of the toughest schedules in the county.  With big wins over LCC, San Marcos, and Steele Canyon they have vaulted themselves into the third seed in the Open Divison.  The Lancers are led by Linebacker Asa Turner who is a Washington Huskies commit.  The Cathedral Catholic Dons are on a roll after losing their opener to LCC, they have crushed every one since.  With big wins over Serra from Gardena, Helix, and Saints they have been unstoppable.  The Dons are led by Senior Shawn Poma who has the ability to score every time he touches the ball.  This is a rematch of last years Division I quarterfinals in which Carlsbad defeated the Dons 38-28, but a lot has changed since last year. This game is expected to be a big-time matchup between the Avocado and Western League with a trip to Southwestern College for a chance to win an Open Division Championship next week.  Coverage begins at 3 PM with Gwynn and Chris live from the campus of Cathedral Catholic.  Tony Gwynn Jr and Chris Ello will preview the game and talk with coaches and players from both squads leading up to the game.  Just before the 7 PM kickoff, they turn things over to Braden Surprenant and The Coach John Kentera for the play by play action.  The game can be heard on 97.3 FM as well as 973thefansd.com and the Radio.com app.
