The Patriarch of the Spanos family passed away today at the age of 95.  Alex Spanos was a self-made man who purchased the Chargers in 1984.  During his stewardship, the Chargers appeared in their only Super Bowl in 1994 against the 49ers.  Under deteriorating health, in recent years he turned over day to day operations of his NFL franchise to his son Dean Spanos in 1994 according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Messages of condolences have come from around pro football and beyond.
