May 29, 2018 - 6:41 pm

Tuesday afternoon our very own Ted Leitner announced via Twitter that he will be missing some upcoming games after being diagnosed with cancer.

Ted is a San Diego icon and has been a long-time fixture on TV with his unique style and wit. Leitner had been behind the mic call Padres games for 39 years and is dean of MLB broadcasters in the NL West. He is also the longtime voice of the San Diego State Aztecs.

The Padres baseball club released a statement from Executive Chairman Ron Fowler and General Partner Peter Seidler:

“We wish our dear friend, Ted Leitner, a speedy recovery from surgery.  While we’ll miss hearing his voice in the booth over the next few weeks, we know he’ll be back healthy and stronger than ever. Our thoughts and prayers are with him during this time.”

Reaction and well wishes have begun pouring in from the baseball community and the city of San Diego for Uncle Teddy.

Tony Gwynn Jr and Chris Ello reacted when the news became public on the afternoon show on 97.3 The Fan.
