Garrett Richards allowed only two hits over seven innings - both to Ozzie Albies - and Francisco Mejia homered for the third consecutive game as the San Diego Padres knocked off the Atlanta Braves, 3-0, at Petco Park.

Richards (1-0), who pitched seven innings without allowing an earned run in his first start against Colorado, was nearly flawless again, allowing only singles to Albies in the first and sixth innings. He struck out eight and walked only two. Luis Perdomo wiped out the final seix Braves over two scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the season.

Meanwhile, Mejia continued to swing a red-hot bat for the Padres. His two-run homer off loser Mike Soroka opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth. His three home runs already are just five fewer than he hit all of last season. The Padres added an insurance run in the bottom of the eigth on Jurickson Profar's RBI single.

The Padres (4-2) are off to a fine start thanks to a 1.89 ERA/ That mound work has overcome a slow start by Friars hitters, including middle of the lineup stalwarts such as Manny Machado and Tommy Pham (both 1-22). As a team San Diego is hitting just .167.
