Surviving a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the eigth inning helped the San Diego Padres escape with a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night at Petco Park. Relievers Emilio Pagan and Drew Pomeranz combined to strike out three straight Braves hitters with the bases full, setting things up for closer Kirby Yates, who retired the side in the ninth for his second save.

The eventual winning run for San Diego (3-2) was provided by Francisco Mejia, whose solo homer in the bottom of the sixth snapped a 2-2 tie. Mejia, who has gone deep in back-to-back games, also threw out Ronald Acuna attempting to steal second base for the final out.

After loading the bases to open the game, the Padres broke out on top 2-0 thanks to a sacrifice fly by Brian Dozier and an RBI single from Eric Hosmer. Joey Lucchesi, who went six innings and struck out nine to pick up the win, coughed up solo home runs to Freddie Freeman and Austin Riley in the fourth, tying the contest, 2-2.
