Coach John Kentera’s Weekly Quick Hits

Baseball

J.D. Martinez- How is he not one of the three finalists for American League Most Valuable Player? The three finalists are Mookie Betts, who should win it, Mike Trout, who had a great year but missed time with an injury, and Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez, who really faded down the stretch. Writers who voted on this should look in the mirror and do their homework.

Cincinnati Reds - Hired David Bell as their new manager. I believe this will be a good choice. Bell, the son of former major leaguer Buddy Bell, has worked on the field as a minor league manager, major league coach and has worked in the front office. The Reds are a blue collar type team and have a blue collar manager.

Texas Rangers - Hired Dodgers 3rd base coach Chris Woodward to become their next skipper. Woodward is a solid choice and he was impressive last year interviewing for the then vacant New York Yankees job. Working the past three seasons for the Dodgers, Woodward is now very well versed in the world of analytics and is also an old-school grinder. All that said, the Rangers desperately need starting pitching. They have some really exciting young position players that have a chance to be special.

Billy Beane- Congratulations to my former teammate Billy Beane of the Oakland Athletics on being named Major League Baseball Executive of the year.

Basketball

Not surprised at all that Magic Johnson had a heated and pointed conversation with Lakers head coach Luke Walton. A week before this meeting, I was also questioning exactly what the Lakers were trying to get accomplished on offense. The Lakers have several problems. Let’s start with the offense when Lebron has the ball and the other four players stand around very stagnant. The Lakers also have so many players trying to prove their worth at the NBA level, namely Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart, who are all extremely talented. They try too hard to get their numbers. When the Lakers get a lead, they get lazy and settle for too many jump shots rather than attacking the basket. The Lakers rely too much on the three point shot and that is definitely not a strength. Defensively, this team has miles to go individually and team defense is non existent at this point. Signing 18 year veteran Tyson Chandler will add a defensive toughness with an attitude and size that the Lakers do not have right now. The Lakers have a chance to be very good even this season with hard work on defense and the offense should eventually come around. Unless the Lakers go south in a hurry, Luke should be around until the end of this season and beyond. If you're a Lakers fan, cross your fingers and just have hope for the 2019-20 season. Anthony Davis or Kevin Durant will be suiting up for the Lakeshow.

College Football

The USC Trojans are struggling with a 5-4 overall record, and are 4-3 in conference, causing the wolves to start hollering to replace head coach Clay Helton. Even though athletic director Lynn Swann has publicly showed support for Helton, the rumor out there is the Trojans may be eyeing former SC All American Jack Del Rio. Del Rio had a successful playing career in the NFL and then head coaching, with stops in Jacksonville and Oakland. Pete Carroll was able to make it work but not sure Del Rio would.

I hope everyone has a great week. Coach Kentera
