Game of the Week: Morse Tigers (2-0) @ #9 Lincoln Hornets (2-0)

Morse and Lincoln have been playing each other since the dawn of time and has been one of the most heated rivalries in San Diego. The battle for Southeast San Diego has actually seen more off the field issues than on the field. Lincoln Head Coach David Dunn and Morse Head Coach Tracy McNair are doing a great job changing that.

The two coaches have been friends since they were three years old. They are both the Godfathers of each others children and have a really strong relationship. A couple years ago, when they allowed Morse and Lincoln to play each other again they started a joint Thursday night meal with the two teams. Their goal? To Unite the community behind the football game. Hence the Unity Bowl.

As far as the game is concerned it should be the most competitive game between the two teams since they started playing again in 2016. Lincoln is coming off a 20-13 overtime victory over San Diego High last week, whereas Morse is coming off two impressive shutout wins over Mount Miguel and Patrick Henry. Offensive mind David Dunn against defensive mind Tracy McNair, whose squad is yet to allow a point this season.

The two teams are highlighted by two Pac 12 committed players, Don Chapman for Lincoln and Shamar Martin for Morse. Contrary to their own coach’s philosophies, Chapman is a dominating physical defensive player who is committed to Colorado, and Martin is a dynamic offensive weapon that is committed to UCLA. Look for these two players to shine in tonight’s game and be the deciding factor.

We are going to take Lincoln 28-24.

Top 10 Picks: Who We Got!

#1 Torrey Pines Falcons (2-0) @ Olympian Eagles (0-2)

This battle of Wing T, ground and pound football teams is most likely going to be a one sided affair. Torrey Pines is coming off a 47-45 thriller last week against Southern Section opponent San Clemente. Trailing 45-38 with under two minutes to play, Torrey Pines scored a touchdown and decided to go for a two-point conversion to take the lead. They were unsuccessful. Ensuing kickoff, Torrey recovers an onside kick and a couple plays later, Kicker Ted Merrifield kicks a 33-yard game winning field goal.

Olympian on the other hand is coming off a 14-0 loss at Poway, where they had all sorts of offensive woes. Look for Olympian to compete with Torrey Pines early but quarterback Jason Heine and running back Max Bingham will be too much for Olympian.

#1 Torrey Pines 42-10 over Olympian

#2 La Costa Canyon Mavericks (2-0) @ San Clemente Tritons (1-1)

La Costa Canyon is off to a hot 2-0 start to their season and a win over San Clemente can almost clinch an Open division playoff spot, assuming disaster does not strike in the second half of the season. San Clemente is going to be fired up to play a San Diego team this week after a gut wrenching loss to Torrey Pines last week. Karson Lippert will carry the Mavericks offense against San Clemente but look for the Tritons to finish on top Friday night.

San Clemente 34-17 over # 2 La Costa Canyon

El Capitan Vaqueros (0-2) @ Madison Warhawks (2-0)

Former Charger running back Ryan Mathews is now the running backs coach at El Capitan. He will have front row seats on Friday to check out the county’s best football player, who just also so happens to play running back. Madison’s Kenan Christon is being recruited by more than twenty-one Division one programs, including the reigning champion Alabama. Christon is going to put up big numbers Friday night against the Vaqueros.

#3 Madison 56-7 over El Capitan

#4 Helix Charter Highlanders (1-1) vs. Saguaro Sabercats (1-1)

Helix did not start the season on a high note dropping a one sided game to Cajon of San Bernardino. They were able to bounce back last week against Arroyo Grande 34-3 last week, and reassure San Diego that Helix is Helix. This is going to be another tough test for the Highlanders but it will only benefit them in the long run. Win or lose on Saturday, Helix will still be one of the top programs in San Diego at the end of the season. For any San Diego State Aztec fans out there, Nate Polk of Saguaro is a highly recruited safety for the Aztecs.

#4 Helix 28-27 over Saguaro, AZ

#5 San Marcos Knights (2-0) @ Oceanside Pirates (1-1)

San Marcos is a team that was flying under the radar when the season started, but after a 2-0 start, no one is sleeping on the knights. Led by quarterback Miles Hastings, a UC Davis commit, the Knights have been lighting up the scoreboard offensively and they will continue that against the Pirates Friday night.

#5 San Marcos 35-14 over Oceanside

Serra (Gardena) Cavaliers (1-0) @ #6 Cathedral Catholic Dons (1-1)

Cathedral Catholic’s offense quickly put the past behind them last week after only scoring seven points in a week one loss to #2 La Costa Canyon. Last week the Dons hung a 56 on the scoreboard and jumped out to a 29-0 lead with five minutes to play in the first quarter. Backed by their star running back Shawn Poma (above), the Dons have a very potent rushing attack. Their competition on Saturday? Extremely explosive offense with many weapons. Serra is better than the Dons across the board on paper, but will be without their captain Max Williams who exited last week’s game due to an injury. Cathedral is going to have to play a perfect game to get the win on Saturday. Look for Serra to win back to back honor bowl games in back to back weeks.

Serra (Gardena) 42-28 over #6 Cathedral Catholic

St. Augustine Saints (2-0) @ Loyola (Los Angeles) (1-0)

Cathedral Catholic and Serra will not be the only game in which the Western League battles the Mission League. St. Augustine and Loyola will play each other for the fifth time in the last five years. Loyola leads the overall series (3-1) over the Saintsmen. In which they have won 41-0, 23-20, and 42-35. St. Augustine enters the game outscoring their opponents 81-0 in their first two games. Loyola played their first game last week and defeated Fairfax 51-7. Saints has a long trip up the five this afternoon and an even longer trip back Friday night.

Loyola (Los Angeles) 42-31 over #7 St. Augustine

Other Great Games Around The County (Rank in SD Section according to Calpreps.com)

Chaminade 35-10 over #8 Mission Hills

#10 Eastlake 35-32 over Santiago (Corona)

#16 Rancho Bernardo (1-1) @ #19 Valley Center (1-1)

#33 Vista (1-1) @ #40 Rancho Buena Vista (1-1)

#26 Point Loma (1-1) @ #11 Otay Ranch (1-1)

#59 Francis Parker (2-0) @ #71 Montgomery (1-1)

# 30 Westview (1-1) @ #38 San Pasqual (1-1)
