Monday Night marked the official start to College Football Bowl Season in San Diego, the host site for the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl. The game will be played on New Years Eve starting at 4pm from SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley, between the Northwestern Wildcats of the Big Ten Conference and the Utah Utes of the Pacific Twelve Conference. The two Head Coaches from both Universities, Pat Fitzgerald of Northwestern and Kyle Whittingham of Utah, met with the media on Monday night for a press conference from the Manchester Grand Hyatt downtown to talk about how both their teams got to this point in the season.

Utah and Northwestern both have had pretty similar seasons, that involve a rough road filled with injuries and adversity that led to both schools competing for a conference championship respectively.

Northwestern enters the Holiday Bowl with an 8-5 record coming off a 45-24 loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship game. After starting the season 1-3, the Wildcats ripped off four in a row and finished the season winning 7 of 8, the lone loss coming to College Football Playoff bound Notre Dame 31-21. Here is Coach Pat Fitzgerald talking about what it means to be in San Diego for the Holiday Bowl:

Northwestern will be playing in the Holiday Bowl for the first time and they are elated to be in San Diego! With that the Wildcats want San Diego to come check them out on New Years Eve, so Coach Pat Fitzgerald has a message for all us San Diegans:

Utah enters the game with a 9-4 record, and like Northwestern, are coming off a loss in their Conference Championship game a 10-3 loss to Washington. Utah had some up and downs as well as they lost both their starting running back and quarterback in the same week before they played Arizona State, which ended in a 38-20 loss to the Sundevils. That particular contest did not take the wind out of the Utes sails however, as they were able to knock off their last three opponents to win the Pac-12 South Division and earn a trip to the Pac-12 Championship game. Here is Coach Kyle Whittingham talking about how his team battled adversity this season:

Head Coach Kyle Whittingham is no stranger to the Holiday Bowl as he played in the first four Holiday Bowls as a member of the BYU Cougars from 1978-1981. Coach Whittingham went 2-2 in the Holiday Bowl as a Cougar in which he was a part of some very exciting games.Whittingham was named the defensive MVP of the 1981 Holiday Bowl. In his first appearance, he played as a running back and the other three as a linebacker, during which he recorded 27 tackles and even attempted the first ever fake punt by a college player in a bowl game. In 2009, he was inducted into the Holiday Bowl Hall of Fame. Here is Coach Whittingham on his favorite Holiday Bowl memories:

The Holiday Bowl has always been a memorable bowl game and we expect 2018 between Northwestern and Utah to be no different!
