Aztecs Football Faces a Tough Test Opening Up Their Season at #13 Stanford

Can they win their 4th straight game against a Pac 12 team?

August 30, 2018 - 3:15 pm

The San Diego State Aztecs under Head Coach Rocky Long have been one of the winningest teams in the country, thanks to 3 straight double digit win seasons. Although  last year’s team only lost 2 regular season games, they were eliminated from the Mountain West Conference Championship and were unable to win their third straight conference title. As Rocky Long would point out, each year is very different and a conference championship this year is the goal.

The Aztecs have won three straight against Pac 12 opponents dating back to 2016, and have a chance to make it four straight with a season opening win against #13 Stanford in Palo Alto. Last year the Aztecs won a thriller at SDCCU Stadium against Stanford when Christian Chapman found tight end David Wells for a game winning touchdown pass with less than a minute to go. To say this game is important to Stanford is an understatement.

The Aztecs have a few holes to fill with departing Seniors, but none bigger than running back Rashaad Penny. Last year’s backup Juwan Washington knows he has big shoes to fill but has contributed in each season he’s been on the team and is ready to be the starter.

The Aztecs defense has a tough test ahead of them because they are going to have to try and contain one of the best running backs in the country, Bryce Love. Love is coming off a great year, but was slowed down late in the year by an ankle injury. Many experts think Love has the talent to win the Heisman trophy and the Aztecs have a chance to spoil the start to his year.

The game takes place Friday night at 6 pm! Go Aztecs!
