Coach John Kentera’s Weekly Quick Hits

Women’s College Volleyball
Can someone in the San Diego or Southern California volleyball community please explain to me how San Diego State's women’s volleyball team is 1-13 and 0-2 in Mountain West Conference play? San Diego and all of Southern California have some of the best talents in the country and I realize all the big powerhouses come here to steal talent. In my view, this is totally unacceptable and it comes down to recruiting. I am going to keep my eye on this and see where it goes. If you cannot recruit, you can’t win in college.

Tiger Woods finally punched it threw this past weekend winning the PGA tour championship in Atlanta. He has overcome so much with injuries and self-destruction. The galleries follow this guy everywhere and I was amazed at what I saw Sunday. Fans couldn’t get enough of him.

UCLA 0-3 at Colorado 3-0- Bruins coming off a bye. We shall see what they can come up with offensively. I wonder what Bruin fans are thinking right now.

Games to watch this Saturday.
Ohio State at Penn State both teams 4-0 and 1-0 in the conference.
Syracuse at Clemson both squads 4-0 and 1-0 in conference play.
Stanford at Notre Dame both teams come in 4-0.

Alabama 4-0
I had a chance to watch the Alabama-Texas A/M game and was so impressed with Alabama in all phases of the game. They are running stuff on offense that I have never seen them do in the past. They have a Quarterback who can get their talented skill players the ball in space. Defensively they bring their normal physicality and special teams just have so much depth. Unless they get complacent which will probably not happen with Nick Saban calling the shots, I can’t see them winning another national championship in January.

Aztecs 3-1 escaped last Saturday night with a win over Eastern Michigan 23-20 in overtime. They have a bye this week then open conference play at Boise State. They need to get a lot better in every area. In my opinion, they are a very mediocre football team.

College Football

San Francisco 49ers 1-2
QB Jimmy Garoppolo went for the season with a torn ACL.
Next man up is 2nd year QB C.J. Beathard, the grandson of Hall of Fame General Manager Bobby Beathard. First opportunity Will be Sunday at the soccer stadium in Carson.

Denver 2-1
The Broncos defense was pushed around by the Baltimore Ravens offensive line which is a major concern that is supposed to be the strength of Denver. I have not been impressed with Head coach Vance Joseph and if I am correct I believe John Elway probably is not as well. He could be on a very short leash. They almost made a change at the end of last season.

Kansas City Chiefs 3-0
QB Patrick Mahomes was absolutely brilliant in his first three games as an NFL starter with 13 touchdown passes and was in complete control of Andy Reid’s offense. Next up will be Monday night in Denver.

Oakland Raiders - Jon Gruden, the 100 million dollar man cannot be getting much sleep these days after his team imploded down in Miami with a 0-3 start and bickering everywhere. Sunday the Raiders will host the Cleveland Browns.

Rams Linebacker Cory Littleton, a Mount Miguel graduate blocked the punt of the Chargers that resulted in a Rams touchdown. He became an instant hero in San Diego. Hope he gets a few free meals out of it this next offseason in America’s finest city.

Rams Quarterback Jared Goff is working his way towards elite status and he has numerous weapons around him.

The Chargers Special Teams unit is a weekly disaster waiting to happen. Personnel changes need to be made and maybe a new special teams coach.

I don’t understand why San Diegan’s still root for the Chargers?
Please put to rest the slogan (The fight for L.A)that was dead on arrival.

Pro Football

Lebron and the Lakers will be in San Diego this Sunday night September 30th, to open Preseason play against the Denver Nuggets. Tip-off is 6:30 pm at the Valley View Casino Center. Hometown boy Luke Walton starts his 3rd season as the bench boss for the legendary franchise. I really don’t know what to expect from this Lakers team. There are a lot of unanswered questions as to how all these new players will fit in. Lebron is still the best player in the world!I think they will figure it out. I Wish Chick were here to call the action.
